“O mar e o cinema eram as únicas formas de sair da ilha.” O olhar documentarista de Blaufuks conduz-nos a São Vicente (Cabo Verde), pelas memórias que o cinema deixou nesta ilha. Assente num interessante trabalho de pesquisa, tanto pela riqueza dos depoimentos, como pelas imagens, “Eden” é um filme que mergulha no imaginário contemporâneo de um povo e de um lugar através da relação destes com o cinema. (Catarina Cabral)

“CEMETERY STATE” de Filip De Boeck e Sarah Vanagt 

Le documentaire suit quelques jeunes et enfants qui vivent et travaillent sur un des cimetières les plus anciens de Kinshasa. Dans “Cemetery State”, Filip De Boeck nous invite de faire un tour dans le cimetière de Kintambo, un des cimetières les plus anciens et les plus grands de Kinshasa, la capitale de la RDC. Avec le temps, la ville s’est approchée de plus en plus du cimetière et des petites villes sont nées tout à fait à côté. Un de ces endroits est le bidonville fort peuplé de Camp Luka (connu également comme “l’Etat”). Ici, les morts et les vivants habitent à proximité. Bien que le cimetière a été fermé par les autorités locales il y a 20 ans, les gens de Camp Luka continuent à enterrer leurs morts là-bas. Ce film tout à fait étonnant suit Papa Mayaula et son petit groupe de fossoyeurs.

The documentary follows a few youngsters and children living and working on one of the oldest cemetaries in Kinshasa. In ‘Cemetery State’, Filip De Boeck invites us on a bewildering tour of the cemetery of Kintambo, one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Over the years, the city has increasingly invaded the cemetery, and shanty towns have sprung up alongside it. One of these is the populated slum area of Camp Luka (also known as ‘the State’). Here, the living and dead live in close proximity. Although the cemetery was officially closed by the urban authorities two decades ago, the people from Camp Luka continue to bury their dead there. This astonishing film follows Papa Mayaula and his small group of grave-diggers. 

“Há mulheres que passam por nós e deixam marca. Vai-se vivendo com isso, como se pode. Tudo se processa. As mulheres dão lugar a imagens e aos poucos vamos acreditando poder manipular o que ficou. Colocamos confissões na parede, desarmamo-nos. Aos poucos vamos conseguindo. Há coisas que não mudam mas ficamos um pouco mais próximo de saber quais são. É a vida. As imagens são um processo.”

On the 23rd and 24th May, the Centre for Social Studies will hold an International Conference to present and discuss the main findings of the project ‘Race’ and Africa in Portugal: a study on history textbooks, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The conference aims at constructing a historically-informed debate on Eurocentrism and racism, bringing together international scholars that work on a diversity of approaches and disciplines, namely History, Anthropology, Political Sociology, International Relations, Sociolinguistics. Focusing on the politics of history and education, the conference will move the debate beyond the positivistic framings that have been characteristic of contemporary understandings of national identity, racism and knowledge in (post-)colonial Europe.

Reconhecendo a responsabilidade do jornalismo e da cidadania nas transformações no mundo actual, e nas relações, muitas vezes assimétricas, entre Europa e África, a ACEP organizaum debate informal, em torno de preocupações comuns: desconstruir estereótipos, renunciar ao simplismo e à história única. Uma leitura da escritora nigeriana Chimamanda Adichie, projectada no início do debate, dará o mote à discussão sobre os diversos códigos de comunicação a partir de diferentes contextos, nomeadamente a representação de África – ou das Áfricas – na Europa e a ideia mediatizada da Europa no continente africano.O papel dos media e das organizações da sociedade civil na Cooperação e no Desenvolvimento é um dos temas-chave do projecto “Portugal e África: Melhor Cooperação, Melhor desenvolvimento”, co-financiado pelo Instituto Português de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento.

Zak Ové, 'The Devil is White', da série «Transfigura» (2004)Já a partir do próximo dia 13 de Maio, vai ser possível ver nas galerias de exposições temporárias do edifício-sede da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian a mostra de fotografias de artistas africanos e afro-americanos que resulta dos 8.º^s Encontros de Bamako: a mais importante bienal de fotografia africana.

“São várias dezenas de fotografias e vídeos de 53 fotógrafos, todos eles glosando o tema «Fronteiras». A questão, abordada sob múltiplos ângulos e com o recurso a várias técnicas, não deixa de ser pertinente no mundo globalizado actual, mas surge associada  de forma particular ao sofrimento e à exclusão, à esperança e às utopias de quem vive em África ou faz parte da diáspora africana. Ao contrário do que foi hábito durante muitos anos, com as imagens de africanos e da sua realidade a serem apresentadas por fotógrafos e realizadores não africanos, desta vez há um discurso fotográfico e imagens cuja autoria é daqueles que habitam neste continente ou que a ele regressam por pertença e dessa realidade fazem a sua representação”.

Os Encontros de Bamako (Rencontres de Bamako) foram criados em 1994, na capital do Mali, por iniciativa da associação “Afrique en Créations” e com o apoio do Governo maliano, sendo dirigidos nessa primeira edição pelos dois fotógrafos franceses Françoise Huguier e Bernard Descamps. Há mais história dos Encontros aqui, onde também se pode ter uma visão antecipada da exposição que foi central nos últimos Encontros e que inaugurará em Lisboa no próximo dia 13 de Maio. 

Comecem por espreitar os trabalhos de Kader ATTIA (França-Argélia), Lilia BENZID (Tunísia-França), Ali Mohamed OSMAN (Sudão), Zak OVÉ (Trindade e Tobago-Grã-Bretanha), Zineb SEDIRA (Argélia-França), Barthélémy TOGUO(Camarões) e Berry BICKLE (Moçambique-Zimbabwe). 

As curadoras destes últimos Encontros realizados em 2009 (está neste momento em início de preparação a edição prevista para finais 2011) foram Michklet Krifa eLaura Serani e o seu texto de apresentação também já está disponível no Jornal do Próximo Futuro. Estarão presentes na inauguração de dia 13 de Maio (às 22h) e haverá visitas guiadas em datas e horários a divulgar muito em breve. 

Aqui encontram ainda uma interessante reflexão sobre a edição que aí vem.

Exposição de Mauro Pinto “Maputo - Luanda - Lubumbashi” na Galeria Influx

No quarto dia do FESTin – Festival de Cinema Itinerante de Língua Portuguesa, no cinema São Jorge, poderão ser vistas produções de Angola, Brasil, Guiné-Bissau, Moçambique, Portugal e Timor Leste. O FESTin 2011 decorre até o dia 01 de Maio com entrada gratuita.

A primeira longa-metragem em exibição, às 15h00, na Sala Manoel de Oliveira, é O milagre de Santa Luzia de Sergio Roizenblit, estreia em Portugal. O filme é uma viagem pelo Brasil que toca sanfona conduzida por Dominguinhos, principal sanfoneiro vivo do país. 

A seguir, na mesma sala, segue-se a exibição do filme Um funeral à chuva, produção portuguesa de Telmo de Campos Martins. O filme conta a história de um grupo de antigos estudantes universitários que reencontram-se na cidade onde haviam estudado, devido à morte de um deles.

Às 19h15, mais uma estreia: a produção brasileira Vingança de Paulo Pons, com um intricado enredo que tem como centro o estupro de uma jovem e a busca do autor do crime pelo seu noivo incitado pela vingança. O noivo pode perder a revanche ao conhecer a irmã do estuprador. 

Por fim, será exibido às 21h30, o documentário DZI Criquettes de Tatiana Issa e Raphael Alvarez. O documentário resgata a trajetória do irreverente grupo DZI Croquettes que se tornou símbolo da contra cultura ao confrontar a ditadura usando a ironia e a inteligência e a defender a quebra de tabus sociais e sexuais.

Neste dia também serão exibidas 3 sessões de curtas-metragens que estão em competição na sala 3 do cinema São Jorge. Dentre os curtas, destaca-se a produção guineense A pegada de todos os tempos de Flora Gomes, O Sabiá e Aos Pés que contarão com a presença do realizador Zeca Brito.

Para completar o dia, às 18h30, ocorrerá a mesa redonda Escrito e Filmado: A literatura lusófona vai ao cinema. Esta mesa tem o intuito de discutir as diversas relações existentes entre o cinema e a literatura, fazendo uma abordagem histórica e comparativa, a traçar o olhar do cineasta, do escritor e da academia sobre o tema. Compõem a mesa Amílcar Bettega (escritor), Brisa Paim (escritora), João Ribeirete (Investigador), José Farinha (realizador) e Tony Tcheka (escritor).

Which roles can art projects, art spaces, self-organized academies and labs play in developing conceptions of the world that go beyond purely economic globalization? The basis for Other Possible Worlds – Proposals on this Side of Utopia is a collection of ideas, concepts, models, terms, projects, kits and modes of acting. It is conceived as a pool for further projects in other parts of the world, it is open to further extension and it allows for varied formats. The NGBK is considered as a common and active space of inquiry for different formats like artistic contributions and installations, workshops, presentations, talks and video screenings.

Huang Xiaopeng unpacks his recent project You are the Dream of my Realization (since 2006) and speaks about the changing process of modernization in China, about social values, the education system, westernized language and individuality. Huang Xiaopeng is currently an Associate Professor and head of the 5th studio (contemporary art practice) in Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art, China.

Today, over half the world’s population lives in cities. In particular, the regions of the Global South face rapid globalisation, with African cities recording the highest urbanisation rates. The African contexts have created specific urban structures, topographies and cultures, notably different from European-American models of urban development. How do these structures function? How do urban dwellers organise their daily life? What issues are addressed in the African discourse on the history and future of cities? What positions do European and African artists take on urbanity in Africa? The Afropolis exhibition is showcasing five African cities - Cairo, Lagos, Nairobi, Kinshasa and Johannesburg.

The curatorial approach highlights the interconnectedness of scientific and artistic concepts, not only exploring urban histories and recent developments, but also presenting 30 artistic viewpoints on issues of urbanity about and from these five cities. The result is a remarkable synergy of scientific and artistic research, documentary material and artistic reflection. The works shown in Afropolis include graphic arts, painting, photography, sculpture, installation, film and video art, as well as design, comics and weblogs.

O passado insiste, qual recalcamento, em vir à tona. A memória da guerra colonial, os conflitos sobre uma descolonização apelidada de “exemplar” ou “desastrosa” revelam, no caso português, o modo como as feridas continuam abertas, sobretudo nas gerações que as presenciaram. As memórias dos “retornados” afloram timidamente, sempre em termos de um debate controverso que parece longe de encerrado.

Por outro lado, gerações mais jovens, não só nostálgicas de uma “África minha”, mas também cada vez mais interessadas ou críticas em relação ao passado colonial, manifestam a sua curiosidade, curiosidade nunca meramente intelectual, atravessada como é por memórias e estórias herdadas de experiências por vezes opostas, mas portadoras, apesar de tudo, de um olhar necessariamente mais distanciado sobre esses acontecimentos.

Uma vez que o luto desse momento está longe de ser resolvido, urge revisitar os elementos “fundadores” do pós-colonial, representados pelos textos aqui reunidos: propostas diversas, por vezes contraditórias, mas todas elas militantemente anti-coloniais.

IN/FLUX is a series of three DVDs. Each DVD is a compilation of experimental films and videos from the African world. The violence and the pleasures, the contradictions, fears and desires of a planet shaped by the postcolonial condition, the present-future of our common humanity in a global, 21st century system shot through with radical change: these are the foci of IN/FLUX, addressed from Africa and her diasporas by creators who reject easy approaches or answers. 
The works included in the first IN/FLUX DVD centre on the dual theme of movement and displacement. They consider shifts in time, place and psyche, in imaginaries and (pre)conceptions, played out on urban stages deployed as laboratories for the elaboration of alternative perceptual fields. A range of genres is represented: documentary gazes and Afrofuturist takes, spy camera zoom-ins and travels through virtual landscapes, (mock) music-video and horror-flick aesthetics. The result is a (media) trip through multiple universes: inner worlds, dreamscapes and in your face reality checks. 
IN/FLUX is a partnership between two cutting-edge entities: SPARCK (Space for Pan-African Research, Creation and Knowledge / The Africa Centre - Cape Town, South Africa) and Lowave (an independent film label based in Paris, France).
