O espetáculo “Alice na cidade: Ciências Sociais, Rap e Mais” dia 17 de junho, pelas 21h30, no Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente (TAGV), em Coimbra. Este evento nasce da vontade de combinar arte e ciência, cruzando linguagens e razões/emoções que costumam andar desencontradas. Músicos, contadores de histórias, poetas, cientistas sociais ocuparão um palco que desafiará as fronteiras entre a cultura popular e a cultura erudita, as narrativas da universidade e da rua, as expressões da periferia e do centro. Rap, funk, kuduro, música cigana, histórias orais, slam poetry e outras poesias têm encontro marcado para uma ecologia de saberes imprevisível.  
“Alice na Cidade” surge no contexto do projeto Alice: Espelhos Estranhos, Lições Imprevistas, que tem como objetivo renovar o pensamento científico-social, desafiando a ciência a dialogar horizontalmente com outros conhecimentos e, nesse exercício de ecologia de saberes, contribuir para uma melhor compreensão do mundo e uma maior eficácia das lutas contra a exploração, a discriminação e a opressão. 

Da gentrificação e do turismo à subida no preço da habitação: causas, consequências e propostas.
Um grupo informal de Lisboetas juntou-se à volta de uma preocupação comum: a percepção de uma abrupta alteração das dinâmicas da cidade de Lisboa e sobretudo da grande subida do preço da habitação. Começaram por conversar casualmente sobre o que os preocupava. Essas conversas tornaram-se mais regulares. As inquietações comuns tornaram-se mote para a organização de um debate à volta do tema. Convidaram-se alguns especialistas para discutir connosco este tema a partir de um texto de trabalho redigido colectivamente e de algumas questões-chave. Les Amazones d’Afrique, o primeiro grande grupo unicamente feminino da África Ocidental, realiza uma residência artística em Sines, entre os dias 18 e 21 de junho, no âmbito da sua tournée internacional, “I Play the Kora”.

Este projeto, formado este ano, mobiliza-se contra a violência sobre as mulheres em África e em todo o mundo. Junta algumas das figuras maiores da música africana: Oumou Sangaré, Mariam Doumbia (de Amadou et Mariam), Nneka, Inna Modja, Imany, Mamani Keita, Rokia Koné, Kandia Kouyaté, Pamela Badjogo e Mariam Koné.

Em simultâneo com o lançamento do EP “I Play the Kora”, Les Amazones d’Afrique lançam uma campanha de “crowdfunding” no dia 15 de junho. Esta campanha e as receitas do EP contribuirão para financiar cirurgias reparativas e integrar socialmente vítimas de violência sexual. Estas ações terão lugar no Panzi Hospital and Foundation, sedeado em Bukavu, na República Democrática do Congo.

O fio condutor da tournée “I Play the Kora” é um manifesto político e ao mesmo tempo uma carta de amor das mulheres endereçada aos seus homólogos masculinos para uma proclamação conjunta da igualdade.

É com esta composição e estas temáticas que serão realizados, em toda a Europa, ateliês de ensaios e reflexões com os coros locais e o público.

A residência artística em Sines será composta por um ateliê de guitarra, um ateliê de coro, uma mesa-redonda e um concerto.

Os ateliês de guitarra e coro realizam-se no sábado, dia 18 de junho, nos períodos 14h00-16h00 e 16h30-18h30, nas instalações da Escola das Artes do Alentejo Litoral (Largo Poeta Bocage).

A mesa-redonda “Os Direitos das Mulheres: Mulher Africana vs Mulher Europeia” tem lugar no domingo, 19 de junho, na cafetaria do Castelo de Sines, das 14h30 às 16h00 e das 16h30 às 18h30.

Os ateliês e a mesa-redonda são gratuitos, mas requerem inscrição na Escola das Artes do Alentejo Litoral (Tel. 269 182 523).

No dia 21 de junho, terça-feira, as 21h00, o projeto apresenta-se ao público, no auditório do Centro de Artes de Sines, com entrada gratuita. Este espetáculo terá a participação de um coro composto por alunos da Escola das Artes do Alentejo Litoral, que no dia 23 de junho se apresentará com o grupo num concerto a realizar na Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, em Lisboa.

A residência artística de Les Amazones d’Afrique em Sines é uma organização da Escola das Artes do Alentejo Litoral, com o apoio da Câmara Municipal de Sines e a parceria da agência 3D Family e da Panzi Foundation.

We encourage interested scholars to send paper proposals for 20 minutes presentations in any of the following indicative, but not exhaustive, areas:

– Borderlines: the making and unmaking of borders in Southern Africa.

– Of Settlements and Diaspora: rethinking migration and settler colonialism.

– Dangerous liaisons: security and circulation under colonialism and apartheid.

– Migrating power: networks and movement during liberation struggles.

– Pathways of circulation: social histories of infrastructure (roads, railways, etc).

– Bodies on the move: histories of legal and illegal migration, for labor and leisure.

– Intersections: the politics of race, gender and class in transnational movements.

– Knowledge unbound: scientific cooperation and circulation of scholars and ideas.

– Celebrating togetherness: the politics of cultural diplomacy and official visits.

– Moving objects: consumption, material cultures and the social worlds they make.

– Moving words: circulation of newspapers, correspondence, books, etc.

– Moving images: photography, film, art, and visual culture across borders.

´ROSTOS E ESPAÇOS´ é o título da Exposição individual do Fotógrafo Moçambicano Mário Macilau, a sua primeira em Angola, enquadrada na 1ª Edição de ´VIDRUL CONVIDA,´ a inaugurar quinta-feira, dia 21 de Abril no Espaço Luanda Arte (ELA) pelas 19h com Curadoria da Angolana Keyezua.

“Há cinco anos que a ´VIDRUL - VIDREIRA DE ANGOLA, LDA´ apoia fotografia experimental em Angola de forma discreta, mas sólida. Como tal, a ´VIDRUL´ posiciona-se como um modelo a seguir pelo mundo corporativo nacional. ´VIDRUL CONVIDA´ é uma sequência natural e um complemento à plataforma ´VIDRUL FOTOGRAFIA´, e um agradecimento por parte da AM-ARTE pela parceria real desenvolvida. Anualmente, terá a responsabilidade e o privilégio de convidar e expôr o trabalho de um fotografo Pan-Africano.

Nesta 1ª Edição em 2016 o convite recaiu sobre Mário Macilau, um dos Artistas Africanos com mais exposição e louvor internacional nos seus (aparentes) poucos anos de trabalho, tendo desenvolvido a sua narrativa com fotografias socialmente fortes, engajadoras e provocantes, que não deixam qualquer espectador indiferente.

Por isso, é motivo de real orgulho podermos trazer trabalhos das séries ´The Price of Cement´ (2013) e ´Living on the Edge´ (2014) para Luanda. A primeira, mostra a trágica realidade de meninos e meninas que trabalham em operações ilegais de ensacamento de cimento em Moçambique. A segunda, retrata uma lixeira no Kenya - uma das maiores no continente - aonde a queimada e os resíduos não-tratados representam um risco grave para a saúde mas, ao mesmo tempo, uma fonte de renda (importante mas escassa) para milhares que vivem e trabalham na área. Infelizmente, são temas universais em África.”

Abstract

This paper reconsiders the way race-politics are made manifest in Afro-Cuban religiosity. Approaching critically the existing literature, it tries to argue that an active effort to make explicit issues of race and how they have mattered historically co-exists with a seemingly contradictory but equally active effort to express that race should not (always) matter. This latter effort, rather than historically, it is materialized mythically and practically or, as Sahlins would have it, mythopractically. Nevertheless, this is not done in competition to the historical dimension but adds to it a very critical edge that has been lacking in conventional understandings of race-politics.

Paper presented by Anastasios Panagitopoulos. Post-doctoral researcher in CRIA/FCSH-Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Anastasios did his B.A. in Sociology at the University of Crete, Greece. Then went on by doing his M.A. and PhD at the University of Edinburgh, UK. In his current postdoctoral position, he is focusing on the relation of Afro-Cuban religions and Cuban politics, as well as the transnational dimensions of the former.

DJ Marfox e a Príncipe têm percorrido um feliz e transformador caminho desde o lançamento do seu EP de debute, e da editora, “Eu Sei Quem Sou”, em finais de 2011, onde tornava clara a sua intenção em apresentar as suas raízes culturais, e raízes enquanto ímpeto para uma evolução crítica, criativa, tecnológica e social. A herança de Marlon Silva aka Marfox ascende a São Tomé e Príncipe, tendo começado a produzir e a tocar ao vivo como DJ na adolescência, disseminando a sua música pelo YouTube e lançando de forma independente singles em mp3 a partir da Portela de Sacavém. A compilação “DJs di Ghetto” (2006), produzida com a sua crew com o mesmo nome, ganhou estatuto lendário no Portugal urbano e nas comunidades da diáspora luso-africana pela Europa fora, contribuindo a partir daí para a emergência de uma rede consistente de jovens criativos ávidos por inovações na cultura e som da música electrónica de dança.

O seu som outrora fundamentalmente cru e minimal progrediu para uma rede complexa e rica de influências e realizações, reflexo da vida que informa a sua música, leal às suas bases, mas ciente de onde está e para onde quer ir. “Chapa Quente” transmite um sentimento de uma contínua cena de perseguição numa Nova Lisboa em dinâmica reorganização pela coexistência de diferentes culturas, algo que ressoa com a vida passada de Marfox no entretanto demolido ‘bairro das barracas’ da Quinta da Vitória, onde cresceu entre vizinhos e amigos emigrantes da Índia, Paquistão, São Tomé e Príncipe e Cabo Verde, algo que ele vê como tendo informado a sua música, sonhada e praticada. Uma paragem para apanhar sol (“Tarraxo Everyday”) mas tudo o resto corre mais rápido que todos nós.

TAFETA is pleased to present the collective photo exhibition BEFORE, BEFORE & NOW, NOW that opens on the 19th of March at 4pm at MIRA FORUM in Porto, Portugal.

This photography exhibition, firstly shown in 2014 at Bohams in London, celebrates the Nigerian history through photographers that have documented and reflected on its peoples, events and transformation into the country that we know it as today. Nigeria, as a nation state emerged from a diversity of preceding kingdoms, emirates, chieftaincies and other communities via an interlude of colonization by the British. This exhibition contrasts artworks by contemporary Nigerian photographers with a selection of works by their Nigerian predecessors (by descent or permanent settlement) produced at significant periods in Nigeria’s formation.

The exhibition invites the viewer to consider the “before” and the “now” – the similarities and differences in technology, in events, individuals and landscapes, and in the particular ways of seeing as each photographer constructs an imagery about their land. These photographers offer diverse and original visions of Nigeria and the rest of the world. Their images are the product, or rather distillation, of specifically Nigerian sensibilities shaped by the cultural, social and ecological experiences of living in the country. They articulate the “now” of Nigeria with its energy and dynamism and its contrasts of individuals, communities and landscapes. At the same time they look to the future with its new possibilities in an ever more inter-connected world. The other end of the spectrum is the “before”, whether in the years leading up to Nigeria’s formation or at independence when the right to self-determination was finally wrested from the departing British.

Some of these include: individual and collective exhibitions, conferences, theater plays, workshops, concerts and dance performances. MIRA FORUM also emphasizes projects that involve local communities. Artistic residencies are also an important component in the intervention of Espaço MIRA and MIRA FORUM. Since October 2013, the gallery presented more than 30 exhibitions, 14 concerts, 10 workshops and 8 art residencies.

Cette intervention se propose d’explorer l’espace de problématisation où la philosophie contemporaine et la décolonisation peuvent se rejoindre en mettant en place une décolonisation des savoirs visant à critiquer les rapports entre le colonialisme et les manifestations de vérité sur lesquelles il s’est historiquement appuyé. Il s’agit donc de se demander sous quelles conditions à la fois théoriques, historiques et géopolitiques est-il possible penser la décolonisation comme un véritable événement philosophique, c’est-à-dire comme un événement excédant à la fois les déterminations historiques et géopolitiques du colonialisme qui l’ont produit, mais aussi l’ensemble des savoirs qui ont gardé soigneusement les frontières occidentales du sens et ont permis de penser et de gouverner ce que la modernité européenne avec sa « mission civilisatrice » a appelé l’« Homme » ?

On verra comment le pivot autour duquel pourraient s’articuler les rapports critiques entre philosophie et décolonisation correspond à ce que, dans le sillage de Michel Foucault, je désigne comme « alèthurgie décoloniale », c’est-à-dire un champ historique et philosophique de problématisation visant à mettre en relief sous quelles conditions pratiques le rapport éthique de soi à soi arrive à produire un régime de vérité qui se manifeste à la fois dans un style individuel d’existence et dans la manifestation des effets politiques qui sont de l’ordre de la rupture et de l’interruption du pouvoir colonial.

Across Africa, the struggle between the forces of capitalism and communism sparked coups, revolutions and political divisions, resulting in a huge impact on Africa’s post-independence landscape. In 1960 Moscow rightly judged anti-colonial fervour to be a good fit with Marxism and Soviet embassies were set up in many African countries. But was there a Soviet strategy for taking over Africa? To what extent was the USSR aware of political structures in Africa and the needs of those countries which it supported? What were the impacts of the Cold War on African national identities?

Ed Cross Fine Art is delighted to announce a solo exhibition for Mário Macilau at this year’s edition of VOLTA art fair in New York City from 2-6th March 2016. This will be Mario’s first exhibition in New York and his first major show after his acclaimed exhibition at The 2015 Venice Biennale.

Mário Macilau lives and works in Maputo, Mozambique.Started his photographic journey in 2003, and went professional when he traded his mother’s cell phone for his first camera in 2007. He specialises in long-term projects that focus on the environmental and social conditions of Mozambique, and the complex reality of the labour market in the region.

Macilau’s work has been recognised with awards, and feautures regularly in solo and group exhibitions in his home country and abroad. Recently he was one of three artists presented at the Pavilion of the Holy See at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015), with a body of work also presented at Volta NY (2016). Also in 2015, Macilau’s work was included in the Vitra Design Museum’s exhibition ‘Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design’, curated by Amelie Klein with Okwui Enwezor as Consulting Curator - the exhibition is planned to tour several countries for five years, and was presented in spring 2015 at the Guggenheim Museum in Spain. Other notable shows include ‘Pangea: New Art from Africa and Latin America’ Saatchi Gallery, London (2014), Fotofest Biennial, Houston (2014), International Biennial of Casablanca, Morocco (2014), ’Tempo’ Galeria Belo-Galsterer, Lisbon (2013), Dak’art Biennial OFF, Dakar (2012), Rencontres de Bamako, Bamako (2011), VI Chobi Mela Photo Festival, Dhaka (2011), Photo Spring, Beijing (2011), and Lagos Photo, Lagos (2010 & 2011).

Recent awards and recognition include Macilau having being invited to participate in a program and exhibition with the United Nations Office, World Press Photo and the Universal Rights Group (2016). Macilau was also chosen as one of the Foreign Policy’s ‘100 Leading Global Thinkers’ at a ceremony in Washington D.C. (2015). In the same year Macilau was selected to give a talk at Harvard University in Boston as one of the panelists during the Boston Global Forum. Macilau’s work has won several awards including the European Union Award for Environment (2015), the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary for Visual Arts (2014), and he is a laureate of the Africa Centre’s Artist in Residency (AIR) Fountainhead Residency Award (2014).
