UNFIXED Symposium: PHOTOGRAPHY, POSTCOLONIAL PERSPECTIVES, CONTEMPORARY ART

UNFIXED is a multiplatform project that explores the elusive “truth” of photography and its relationship to ideas of ethnicity, culture and identity in contemporary art.

The symposium will explore photography’s relationship to changing notions of cultural histories, identities and representations. The day will include talks, presentations and discussions by the artists, a keynote speaker, curators, and scholars. Presentations will take varied forms including lectures, conversations, performances, etc.

SPEAKERS AND PRESENTERS

Art historian and critic Kobena Mercer (UK) will present the keynote lecture.

The day will include lectures and presentations from each of the artists exhibited in UNFIXED - Charif Benhelima (BE), Otobong Nkanga (FR/NG), Keith Piper (UK), Naro Snackey (NL), Hulleah Tsinhnahjinnie (US) and Hank Willis Thomas (US). These artists actively incorporate research and theory into their conceptual practice. Along with their art practice, members of this diverse group also sideline as lecturers, writers, performers and cultural critics. Their presentations will address strategies, motives and history of photography embedded in their work. Other speakers include Pamela Pattynama (NL) Natalie Robertson (NZ) and a collaborative presentation of Andrea Stultiens (NL), Kaddu Wasswa John (UG) and Arthur Kisitu (UG)
