O Centro de Estudos Africanos do ISCTE-IUL em parceria com Instituto de História Contemporânea da Universidade Nova de Lisboa e o Centro Interdisciplinar de História, Culturas e Sociedades da Universidade de Évora co-organizam o seminário ‘Ventos de mudança no Mundo Colonial: as Nações Unidas, Portugal e as independências Africanas’.

“Juntando especialistas das descolonizações europeias e investigadores mais jovens, o seminário discutirá o impacto destes acontecimentos e dinâmicas nos impérios europeus, e, em paralelo, uma mesa redonda reunindo vários estudiosos da África contemporânea fará o balanço de cinco décadas de independências no continente”

“1960, o ano em que Harold Macmillan cunhou a célebre expressão “os ventos de mudança” foi um ano charneira na história da África contemporânea. Treze antigas colónias da França, Bélgica e Reino Unido acederam á independência, o massacre de Sharpeville na África do Sul despertou a opinião mundial para a realidade do apartheid e, em Dezembro, a Assembleia-Geral da ONU aprovou um conjunto de resoluções apelando ao fim do sistema colonial. De caminho, a Guerra Fria ia-se instalando no continente africano graças à caótica transição no Congo belga e à luta pela influência que as duas superpotências aí travavam.”

Shetani é uma palavra swahili que significa espírito ou diabo. Deriva do árabe, Shaitan. Os shetanis são criaturas mitológicas, geralmente malévolas, à volta dos quais se gerou uma importante tradição oral nalgumas regiões da África oriental. Podem aparecer sob diferentes formas, cada um com diferentes funções e “poderes” e são considerados pelas populações locais como os principais causadores de adversidade.  

Os shetanis são tradicionalmente representados pelo povo Maconde do sul da Tanzânia e norte de Moçambique sob a forma de figuras antropomórficas, distorcidas, assimétricas e com características físicas extremamente exageradas. 

Na cosmogonia Maconde, existem vários tipos de shetanis: o perigoso ukunduka, que se alimenta através das relações sexuais, o shetani-camaleão, um carnívoro voraz com características de réptil ou o inofensivo shuluwele, que colhe ervas medicinais na floresta, são alguns exemplos.

Os shetanis de George Lilanga, no entanto, não são assustadores ou malvados. A cosmogonia de Lilanga inclui os impecavelmente-bem-vestidos-shetanis-yuppies, os shetanis-com-telemóvel ou os shetanis-futebolistas, numa crítica divertida e mordaz às contradições da sociedade tanzaniana actual.

George Lilanga (1934-2005) nasceu em 1934 na aldeia de Kikwetu,no sul da Tânzania.

Inauguração Atelier Aberto: Exposição de Eduardo Malé, “Nós e Nozes”. A partir das 19h, na Rua da Saudade, nr. 15 rc/ esq. Lisboa.

Eduardo Malé nasceu em São Tomé e Principe e tem vindo a expor regularmente em São Tomé, na Bienal, em Portugal, e noutros países de África e da Europa. É professor de Educação Visual e Tecnológica, mediador de arte e trabalhou no cinema de animação. Consulte a sua página pessoal aqui.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary 22 African states in 2010 and 2011, the European Commission, together with architect David Adjaye, curator Simon Njami and the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels, in partnership with the Commission of the African Union, is launching a multi-disciplinary travelling exhibition.

Entitled Visionary Africa: Art at Work, the exhibition focuses on the importance of culture and creativity as development tools and includes a travelling exhibition of contemporary African artistic practices, residencies of African artists in different countries, and workshops on the relation between art and development.

The exhibition, curated by Simon Njami, was previewed in the Libyan city of Tripoli on Monday, in conjunction with the European Union-Africa Summit, and will travel to Addis Ababa (January 10 – 30, 2011) and Ouagadougou (February 19 – March 13, 2011). The exhibition will be staged in a wooden pavilion designed by David Adjaye. The aim of this new exhibition is to provide, through the work of African artists, “a snapshot of the transformations that have occurred on the African continent during the last half century, as well as put its future development into perspective,” reads a press statement.

Apresentação do documentário Africalls? onde Nástio Mosquito, angolano, artista visual, músico, performer, videasta é o “guia“ da cidade de Luanda, mostrando o seu contexto, as suas inquietudes e motivações de criação.
Africalls? fez parte de um projecto de exposição e livro da Casa África, nas Canárias. Projecto curado por Elvira Dyanani Ose. Realização de Pere Ortín Andrés e produção We are here! films.
A apresentação em Lisboa é organizada em colaboração com Francisca Bagulho.

On The Roof – Slide show project is presented by Elise Atangana, Yves Chatap and Christine Eyene, a trio of Cameroonian art professionals based between Paris and London. It proposes a feast for the eyes, promising a visual and sound journey through a most varied selection of images, photographic practices and genres. The slide show features new work from African and Diaspora photographers that define today’s and tomorrow’s trends.

The first edition of ADDIS FOTO FEST, Addis Ababa’s first international photography festival, directed and curated by Aida Muluneh. From December 7 to 11, 2010, brings together photographers from Africa and the Diaspora, in order to foster a dialogue through various exhibitions, concerts, panel discussions, residency programs, portfolio reviews, film screenings, slideshow presentations & much more.

The purpose of the House of African Art (HAA!) is to allow the Japanese public to discover the dynamism of a continent that has preserved its deeply rooted traditions while giving birth to innumerable creative geniuses: photographers, painters, musicians, dancers, film-makers. These talented artists, with their utterly original and individual voices, realize their works in a universal dimension that overcomes social, religious and linguistic barriers.
By putting Africa in a positive light and emphasizing its rich arts and culture, HAA! will contribute to a much needed change in the general Japanese perception of the continent.
To re-introduce Africa to Japan, through the beauty, energy and spirituality of African arts, both traditional and contemporary, HAA! works in the three following ways:

PUMA.Creative and the Bass Museum of Art announce a three-year partnership as part of the launch of the Creative Caribbean Network, an initiative dedicated to promoting the work of Caribbean artists. This partnership will celebrate the rich artistic heritage of the Caribbean region and the Caribbean Diaspora by creating an international platform in Miami for photographers, performers, writers, musicians and other artists from the Caribbean region. An ongoing series of exhibitions, music performances, educational activities and other live events will take place at the Bass Museum site at key dates in the Miami cultural calendar over the next three years.

To launch the initiative, the Bass Museum of Art and PUMA.Creative are delighted to present, a solo exhibition of work by the celebrated artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien in a project entitled Isaac Julien/Creative Caribbean Network. Presented from December 2, 2010 through March 6, 2011, this exhibition will open to the public concurrent to Art Basel Miami Beach.

ISAAC JULIEN/Creative Caribbean Network is the most comprehensive exhibition of the artist’s work in the last ten years. It showcases the US premiere of Julien’s critically acclaimed, nine-screen installation, Ten Thousand Waves (2010) as well as the film installations and photographic seriesParadise Omeros (2002), Baltimore (2003) and Vagabondia (2000).

Julien is a British artist and filmmaker, of Caribbean heritage, whose work incorporates different artistic disciplines, drawing from and commenting on film, dance, photography, music, theatre, painting and sculpture, and uniting them to create a unique poetic visual language in audiovisual film installations. Julien is as equally acclaimed for his fluent, arresting films as his vibrant and inventive gallery installations. His installations are presented on an epic scale; poetic and art-historical references are interwoven into frank portrayals of human drama.

Casa África announces the 2010 Casa África Prizes for Essays on African topics, whose aim is to recognize, encourage and disseminate original and unpublished essays which enhance knowledge about Hispano-African relations with respect to the two contexts or issues indicated in rule number 4:

- Culture as a factor of development in África
- Environmental sustainability and development in Africa.

Works can be written in four languages (Spanish, English, French and Portuguese) and the Jury will evaluate the quality and current relevance of the papers as well as their contribution towards improving knowledge of each of these subject matters. The deadline for submission of the essays is April 22, 2011. Each of the selected works shall be awarded a prize of 4.000 euros.

O GOVERNO DAS DESIGUALDADES

De uma tradução feita a muitas mãos

Os neoliberais têm, claramente, uma política social. A sociedade, com o neoliberalismo como com o Keynesianismo, é alvo de uma intervenção permanente. O que mudou foi o objecto e a finalidade dessa intervenção. Trata-se de estabelecer um estado de “igual desigualdade” e de “pleno emprego precário”. Deste governo pela desigualdade que trata cada indivíduo, cada trabalhador considerado individualmente, como uma empresa, emergem os medos diferenciadores que atingem todos os segmentos da sociedade neoliberal e que constituem o seu alicerce afectivo. Porque recusa confrontar-se com os efeitos de poder da protecção social e não pretende mais que defender os direitos adquiridos, a esquerda é impotente face a esta política. Para sair deste impasse, deverá aprender a combinar a luta pelos direitos, a luta no terreno da representação política, bem como as lutas económicas, com as lutas para se governar a si-mesmo. Ou seja, é urgente articular, em vez de as opor, “crítica social” e “crítica artística”.

A apresentação terá a participação especial do músico e compositor Princezito que fará uma leitura dramatizado de um texto. O lançamento terá um ambiente totalmente informal e contará também com leituras encenadas de alguns diálogos do livro pelos actores Dulce Sequeira, José Pedro Bettencourt, Paulo Silva e Raquel Monteiro.
