It is a unique feature of the lusophone world that no Portuguese-speaking country borders on another. The lusophone world is therefore a pattern of islands divided from each other by oceans - whether maritime, territorial, or linguistic ones. Nowhere is this more the case than in the territories, countries, and regions of the Indian Ocean and South China Sea, where the Portuguese left their language and culture, an area bounded by Mozambique in the West and Macau in the East, and taking in Goa, Sri Lanka, Malacca, and East Timor, - islands, peninsulas, old trading emporia, local communities whose identities have somehow been shaped by Portuguese. Within the broad field of postcolonial studies, and within what might be termed the discrete discipline of lusophone postcolonialism, the colloquium will look at the history, literature and culture of these former territories of Portugal in order to determine to what extent their association with Portuguese feeds into any notion of postcolonial identity, and to draw, where appropriate, comparisons and contrasts with other parts of the world, notably the lusophone Atlantic.

We welcome proposals for papers in English or in Portuguese or panels incorporating any of the following topics and themes:

* Literature from Goa, Macau and East Timor in Portuguese or other languages.

* The History and Literature of Mozambique in the context of the country’s links with societies and cultures across the Indian Ocean.

* Literature or other cultural manifestations from Malacca, Sri Lanka, or other parts of South East Asia, which speak of an association with Portuguese.

* The social and cultural histories of the Portuguese in the Indian Ocean and South China Sea.

* Creolization, creole languages, creole cultures.

* Portuguese Orientalism.

* Comparative literary or historical themes relating to the above.

Pena-Insularidade: escrever o Oriente e o Ocidente em Português

Uma das características distintivas do mundo lusófono é o facto de nenhum dos seus países fazer directamente fronteira com outro. Deste modo, podemos considerar que o mundo lusófono é um conjunto de ilhas com oceanos de permeio, sejam eles feitos de mar, de terra ou de língua. Em mais nenhum lado acontece tal fenómeno, com territórios, países, regiões, espalhados pelo Oceano Índico e pelo Mar da China, locais onde os portugueses deixaram a sua língua e cultura. Vestígios de vária ordem espalhados num elo que se estende de Moçambique, a Oeste, a Macau, a Oriente, incluindo Goa, Sri Lanka, Malaca, e Timor-Leste - ilhas, penínsulas, antigos entrepostos comerciais, comunidades cujas identidades foram de algum modo moldadas pelos portugueses. No âmbito do extenso campo dos Estudos Pós-Coloniais, e mais concretamente no que concerne o Pós-Colonialismo Lusófono, este colóquio irá debruçar-se sobre a História, a Literatura e a Cultura desses antigos territórios portugueses, de modo não só a determinar até que ponto a associação desses com a Língua Portuguesa vai beber a qualquer noção de identidade pós-colonial, mas também de modo a comparar e contrastar com outras partes do mundo, nomeadamente com a lusofonia de vertente atlântica.

Aceitam-se propostas de comunicação em inglês ou português, ou painéis que debatam qualquer um dos seguintes tópicos ou temas:

* Literatura de Goa, Macau e Timor-Leste em português ou em outra língua.

* História e Literatura de Moçambique no contexto das suas ligações com outras sociedades e culturas do Oceano Índico.

* Literatura ou qualquer outra manifestação cultural de Malaca, Sri Lanka, ou outro território do Sudoeste Asiático, que esteja associado com a Língua Portuguesa.

* Histórias sociais e culturais dos portugueses no Oceano Índico e no Mar da China.

* Crioulização, línguas crioulas, culturas crioulas.

* Orientalismo Português.

* Temas de História ou Literatura Comparadas relacionados com qualquer dos temas acima mencionados.
