Tiago Borges

Luanda (1973) BA Hons (Manchester University) Architecture and MA (Royal College of Art) Interaction Design. Teaches at Escola Superior de Arte e Design of Caldas da Rainha since 2006.

Born in Angola during the upheavals of a country in throes of independence, Tiago Borges grew up with war, kidnap, dystopia and misadventure.
In his work he often incorporates a number of materials to give body to metaphoric and artistic possibilities using his characteristic form of irony. Objects and images are often subtracted from their original contexts and grouped in determined ways which provoke an effect of ‘estranging’ evoking esoteric-cum-provocative imaginaries. His outputs include web pages, diagrams, schemes, installations, machines that produce sound effects, apparent random stacking of symbols/objects, amputated neon/toys, low-fi systems, broken grammatics and formulae, stencil and graffiti, editorial/cinematographic projects and an endless array of drawings and sketches expressing psychogeographies/philosophies of contemporary perceptions and dyslexia.
Using excess as breath, the anarchic ghosts in his works escape territorialization.

He has participated in international group exhibitions, among others Europa Central, Plataforma Revolver, Lisbon, Tentativa d’Agotar un Lloc Africa, Barcelona, or the Vª Bienal de Sao Tome e Principe.
