Ruy Duarte de Carvalho

(1941-2010) Poet, anthropologist, writer and cineast. Participated in Angola’s freedom fight and is an Angolan citizen since 1975 when Angolan citizenship was created. Son of an adventurous elephant hunter, grow up in Namibe, in the country’s south.

Besides agriculture officer and sheep farmer, studied cinema in London. In 1982, got the diploma from the School of High Studies in Social Sciences in Paris with the film ” Nelisita”, had also done his PhD in the same school, in 1986, in Social Anthropology and Ethnology, with a thesis about the production of cultural difference between fishermen in Luanda’s coast.  Was a teacher in Luanda, Coimbra, Sao Paulo, Paris and Berkely. His base was always Angola until he moved to Swakopmund, Namibia, in 2008. His poetry can be found  gathered in Lavra (2005) and the books Vou lá visitar pastores (1999), Actas da Maianga (2003), Os Papéis do Inglês, As paisagens Propícias (2005), Desmedida (2007), that won the Literary Prize Casino da Póvoa, and A Terceira Metade (2009), all edited by Cotovia. In Brasil Os Papéis do Inglês (Companhia das Letras) and Desmedida (Língua Geral).
