Born in Huambo in 1975, Sérgio Afonso started shooting in 1992, when he had access to the first camera.
The portrait was his point of interest, an inheritance of his father and uncles who, from an early age, he lived around ID photographs, dark cameras and negatives.
Already after starting his career as a photographer in an advertising agency, he trained in Fashion Photography and Advertising at ETIC in Lisbon in 2004.
In 2010, he graduated in film editing from the Darcy Ribeiro Film School in Rio de Janeiro.
In advertising, Sergio photographed campaigns for the most important brands in the Angolan market. Worked as a photographer for the magazines Economia e Mercado, Austral and his photographs were also published in several international newspapers, such as Público (Portugal) and The Guardian (UK), PHOTO France and FOCUS (Germany).
Sergio photographed the covers of the books Os da minha rua, by Ondjaki, and Poeira do Tempo by José Mena Abrantes.
Participated in collective exhibitions such as the Triennial of Contemporary Art of Angola with the work “Monarcas” (Collection Sindika Dokolo) and Private Lives in Portugal. His first solo exhibition was “WANNABE” in the project Vídrul Fotografia.
Sérgio Afonso participated in the artistic residencies “Off Lines, between transits and trips” (2013), promoted by the organization Xerem, and Trinagle Network (Portugal) , where he exhibited “Entre Trânsitos e Viagens”. He was also invited by the Goethe Institute to ADDIS PHOTO FEST (2014) in Ethiopia. In 2017, he was selected for the residence Catchupa Factory, in Mindelo, Cape Verde, where he presented “Evasões”, a work that portrays the moments of escape of the Mindelo citizens.
In cinema, he began producing the documentary “Strongest Heart” by director Ricahrd Paklepa, and he also operate the camera.
Sérgio Afonso joined the Geração 80 team in 2012 and was DP of the short film “Luanda 24/7” and the documentary “Triângulo” (2013)
In 2016, Sérgio made his first documentary, “Do Outro lado do Mundo.” Filmed between Luanda and Bentiaba, the film was the Angolan project selected for the CPLP II DOCTV program and aims to talk about the contemporary human relations derived from the exchange between Angola and China.
