BLACK IS… is a multidisciplinary work of performance, film and photography. This work was cultivated to confront social structures that uphold imperialism and honour the collective heritage black people share whilst highlighting diversity among black communities. Looking at themes of displacement & identity, FUBUNATION confronts the conflict of never really belonging in a western world. How does this internal conflict of cultures compromise one’s sense of identity and affect what defines one’s sense of home? BLACK IS… questions whether black people find home on land or in community. It is a display of the upholding and uplifting of one another through trepidation and triumph. Unrelenting and unstoppable, BLACK IS… exploration, pushing against boundaries and forging new life whilst fuelling creativity and excellence, rhythm and cadence, movement and sound that crescendos into new life.
