Sinopse
“Quando a historiadora belga Florence Gillet escreveu um artigo sobre a vida de André Cauvin para a CINEMATEK, intitulou-o Histoire d’un Passion Ambiguë pour l’AfriqueBwana Kitoko (1955), o documentário que o cineasta realizou para documentar a viagem do rei Balduíno ao Congo e ao Ruanda-Urundi, é porventura o exemplo mais paradigmático daquilo que foi, entre 1938, o ano de De Melaatsheid (A Lepra) de Gérard De Boe e 1960, a data da independência do Congo, esta ambiguidade do cinema colonial belga.

Bwana Kitoko, o seu projecto subsequente, apesar de partilhar com os filmes de De Boe um apagamento total de qualquer manifestação de dissidência e a vontade de construção de uma utopia audiovisual, é uma obra com algumas idiossincrasias significativas do ponto de vista cinematográfico e sociológico. “

CONGO STARS VIBRATION em Lisboa

Formada por imigrantes originários da região do Baixo Congo - que engloba Angola, Congo Kinshasa e Brazaville – a banda Congo Stars foi fundada há cerca de 12 anos com o intuito de rememorar os sons tradicionais desta região em terras lusitanas.

Ritmos como kilapanga, kizomba, sukus, semba e rumba congolesa, tocados com a mbonda, o lokole e o likembe (xilofone), fazem parte do repertório da banda, mas também a fusão com outros sons, como reggae e salsa são cantados em lingala, português, kikongo e kimbundo, dando a real dimensão da diversidade rítmica/linguística desta zona da África banto.

Atualmente composta por 8 integrantes (entre congoleses e angolanos) a banda se caracteriza pelo constante trânsito musical, contando com a participação de músicos de outras partes da África.

Tintin e racismo

Reflexão de Pedro Moura em torno da recente decisão do tribunal belga em relação ao processo instado pelo cidadão congolês Bienvenue Mbutu Mondondo em relação à edição de Tintin no Congo.

“esta foi uma oportunidade perdida para instaurar uma discussão séria, balizada e sustentada sobre o papel desta obra no quadro social contemporâneo. Não se procurando uma contextualização maior, uma preocupação em compreender o processo, o gesto de Mondondo, ou até mesmo de reler o livro de Hergé, tudo se resumia a um “achas que o Tintin é racista?”, “Claro que não!”, e pronto. Claro, usualmente tudo isto do lado daqueles que, como nós, portugueses contemporâneos, somos herdeiros de um império colonial que ainda olha as suas ex-colónias como palcos preferenciais de negócios e exploração e constante rebaixamento (“Nem se souberam governar…”).”

City of Joy, a Revolutionary Center for Women Survivors of Gender Violence, Celebrates First Graduating Class on January 28 in Bukavu, DRC

Tomorrow, Saturday, January 28, V-Day and the Fondation Panzi (DRC), will celebrate the first gradating class of City of Joy in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).   City of Joy, a revolutionary community for women survivors of gender violence, opened its doors to the pilot class of 42 women this summer.

This first class has taken part in a diverse and impactful six-month curriculum that includes: group psychotherapy; self-defense; English; literacy; communications; civic and political education including civil rights; comprehensive sexuality education; massage; physical education, and horticulture. The program was designed by local staff to address the unique emotional, physical, and intellectual needs of Congolese women survivors of gender violence, and to provide them with the tools necessary to return to and thrive in their communities upon graduation.

“Following the six-month program, a marked change in the women is already evident,” said V-Day Congo Director & Director of City of Joy, Christine Schuler Deschryver.  “Upon their arrival the faces of these women showed signs of despair, discouragement, and loneliness.   Over time they have, little by little, been helped to use their past difficulties as a source of empowerment. Through the training and programming at City of Joy, these women have moved from pain to power and will return to their homes ready to help revolutionize their communities.”

 

The City of Joy is part of a worldwide campaign that was initiated in 2007 to raise awareness about the level of gender violence in the DRC and advocate for change throughout the Congo. Conceived and developed by the women on the ground in partnership with V-Day and the Panzi Fondation (DRC), the construction of the City of Joy began in September 2009 and opened its doors in June 2011.  The second City of Joy class of 90 women is scheduled to begin the program on February 14, 2012.

J’ai le réel plaisir de vous inviter à visiter l’exposition Congo Farwest à partir du 10 mai 2011 au Musée de Tervuren.L’exposition est le résultat d’une résidence dans les collections du département d’histoire coloniale du musée. Depuis septembre 2008, Patrick Mudekereza et moi avons travaillé sur les archives coloniales.Nous serons heureux de vous présenter nos travaux et de recevoir vos commentaires.

A cidade, em festa desde o fim de semana passado, fervilha: feira de artesanato na rua pedonal do plateau, feira da música no pcil; o olhar fotográfico de Omar Camilo e o trabalho de Domingos Luísa  estão expostos em duas casas da Praça Alexandre Albuquerque; na rua 5 de Julho monta-se uma palco; na pracinha o chão areja entre palcos vis-a-vis e KJF.

Congo, where rumba meets r'n'b, Staff Benda Bilili & NBE, Mwana

In cinemas now is the film Benda Bilili, a documentary telling the extraordinary story of Staff Benda Bilili. If you haven’t been paying attention, Staff are a group of mostly polio-stricken street musicians from Kinshasha who’ve ended up making it big around the world. This is undoubtedly something to celebrate – but with all due respect to the band, it is shameful that it takes a Congolese act to be disabled to make them of such interest. In many ways, the band’s image reflects a very western perception of African music. The reality for the blinged-up stars and their adoring fans in the dancehalls of Kinshasa can often involve a very different, much glitzier story.

Back catalogues of outstanding Congolese music are largely ignored in the UK, yet few countries have produced such a rich seam of consistently innovative and socially meaningful popular music. From roughly 1960-1990, artists such as Franco and his band TPOK Jazz,Tabu Ley Rochereau and Zaiko Langa Langa were the biggest musical acts in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. In terms of musicianship, Franco’s music is up there with the Beatles, yet if you ask 99% of people in Europe or America, they won’t have heard of him.

In 2011 the music heard in the streets and bars of Kinshasa increasingly blends dancehall, hip hop and r’n’b with traditional rumba, while artists such as JB Mpiana, Ferre Gola and Koffi Olomide are as much about image, designer gear, waving wads of cash and bragging as they are about the music. The perceived inaccessibility of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with its extreme poverty, ongoing conflicts, corruption and lack of basic public facilities, provides a barrier to musical tourists. The irony is, of course, that the music is joyful and uplifting; anything but dark – although there is also a rich tradition of social and political commentary in Congolese music.
