Behind the lines screening

19th November, 18:00, VWB5.29
Monangambé, 1968, Sarah Maldoror, 11’
Monangambé was shot in three weeks, near Algiers, with no actors. It is an adaptation, by Sarah Maldoror, Mário Pinto de Andrade, poet and one of the founders of MPLA ( People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola), and Serge Michel, of the short story O fato completo de Lucas Matesso (1962), by Luandino Vieira. It represents the Portuguese people’s ignorance of Angolan culture and the brutal treatment that was inflicted upon political prisoners.
Behind the Lines, 1971, Margaret Dickinson, 50’
In 1971 Margaret Dickinson made one of the defining films of FRELIMO’s armed struggle
against Portuguese colonialism in Mozambique, an anti-colonial war that had then been
raging for nearly ten years. Behind the Lines documents how the struggle transformed the lives of all those who participated in it, and how the liberated zones functioned as a
laboratory in which FRELIMO could start to provide health care and education for the people of Mozambique in anticipation of Independence.

Conspiração, vamos ler Liberdade I LISBOA

Gisela João (fadista), António Pinto Ribeiro (ensaísta e programador cultural), Miguel Soares (cientista), João Botelho (realizador), Inês Oliveira (realizadora), Cucha Carvalheiro (actriz), Manuel Wiborg (actor), Vera Kolodzig (actriz), Filipe Vargas (actor), Rita Brütt (actriz), Jorge Andrade (actor), Joana Seixas (actriz), Pedro Lacerda (actor), Fernando Luiz Sampaio (poeta), Inês Pereira (actriz) e Ricardo Araújo Pereira (humorista) lerão excertos de “Da Ditadura à Democracia”.

Internacionalmente, a acção será assegurada pelos artistas Fatimah White (Nova Iorque), Beau Baco (Nova Jérsia), Chris Danowski (Phoenix), Hani Moustafa (Chicago), Andrea Spaziani (Toronto), Anthony Baggette (Berlim), Ray Granlund (Londres), Honi Ryan (Veneza), Abi Tariq (Paris), Amy Konigbauer (Montpelier), Laura Gonzalez (Glasgow), Nicola Carter (Nottingham), Analia Sirabonian (Buenos Aires), Alejandro Fargosonini (Tóquio), Marta Ferreira (Macau) e José Drummond (Hong Kong).

Making Africa – A Continent of Contemporary Design

October 30, 2015–February 21, 2016 Curators: Amelie Klein, Vitra Design Museum; Petra Joos, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is pleased to present Making Africa – A Continent of Contemporary Design, an exhibition organized by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Vitra Design Museum, in collaboration with the German Federal Culture Foundation and the Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne.

The show exhibits work from a diverse range of creative fields: object and furniture design graphic arts, illustration, fashion, architecture, urban planning, craft, film, photography, as well as digital and analogue approaches; these works demonstrate the political, economic, social, cultural, and technological transformation of the continent. This evolution, especially evident in Africa, is led by a new generation of thinkers and makers, who propose multidisciplinary, innovative solutions for the continent and the world, simultaneously revolutionizing our traditional understanding of design.

The works in the exhibition provide concrete answers to the question of what twenty-first century design can and should achieve. These pieces are often created in small quantities by a collective of individuals; they are typically produced de-centrally, in an urban context, and are more oriented to the process than the result. They often emerge from the informal maker culture, in which something existing is reworked or new work is produced with traditional and electronic tools. The works establish connections between the digital revolution and our analogue existence, radically rethink materials, concentrate on society rather than the market, and make bold statements about the future.

These contemporary creations forge a link to the middle of the twentieth century, when a young generation celebrated its liberation from colonialism by asserting its place in the world and its right to a promising future. The exhibition does not strive to present a complete picture of design in Africa, an impossible task due to the size, complexity, and diversity of a continent with 54 nations, more than 2,000 languages and cultures, and a billion inhabitants. What the exhibition offers instead is a new narrative—one possibility among the many that could appear as we look at Africa—and a clear invitation to consider this continent from an entirely new perspective.

The challenge of Making Africa – A Continent of Contemporary Design is to shed new light on contemporary African design through the work of over 120 artists and designers and to illustrate how design accompanies and drives political and economic change on the continent. The exhibition presents Africa as a hub of experimentation generating new approaches and solutions of worldwide relevance and as a driving force for a new discussion about the potential of design in the twenty-first century. The exhibition focuses on a new generation of African entrepreneurs, thinkers, and designers—”digital natives” who address a global audience and provide a new vantage point on their continent. They often work across several disciplines simultaneously and break with the conventional definitions of design, art, photography, architecture, and film.
